Gibson named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year

Devin Gibson

FRISCO — UTSA junior guard Devin Gibson has been named Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday.

Gibson, who also earned his second Southland Conference All-Academic certificate, is the second Roadrunner to be named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year, as he joins two-time winner Kurt Attaway (2005, ’06).

Gibson, a three-time All-Southland Conference selection, carries a 3.22 grade-point average in infrastructure assurance and information systems (double major) with a minor in finance. The Houston native was named second-team all-conference this season after averaging 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He shot 82.5 percent from the free-throw line and 40.7 percent from the floor.

The Cy-Falls High product became the 13th UTSA player to reach 1,000 career points in February and now ranks ninth with 1,104. He finished ranked second in the league in assists, steals and free throw percentage and reached double figures in 21 games, including four 20-point outings. Gibson was tabbed Southland Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after averaging 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in victories against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston.

Gibson was named third-team all-league as a sophomore and Southland Freshman of the Year and second-team all-conference in 2008. He became just the third freshman in NCAA history to lead nation in steals per game (3.3) in 2008 and finished third in the country in thefts (3.0) as a sophomore. The two-time Southland Scholar-Athlete of the Week honoree has served as UTSA’s representative to the 2009 NCAA Leadership Foundation Conference and is actively involved in hospital and school visits and Roadrunner Move-In Days.
