NACOGDOCHES ? Senior Aimee Murray and sophomores Rachel Rackley and Leanne Risberg all homered as UTSA run-ruled Stephen F. Austin, 11-2, in game two of a Southland Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Hoya Field. Kendal Harper’s RBI fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth scored Malina Meng with the winning run in a 6-5 victory for the Ladyjacks in game one.
With the split, the Roadrunners move to 23-25 overall and 15-8 in the league while SFA stands 19-28 and 12-11.
UTSA exploded for 11 runs on 16 hits in the nightcap. Rackley was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Risberg, senior Jessica Rogers and freshman Krista Sitka collected two hits apiece. Risberg’s two long balls gave her 12 for the year, while Murray hit her 12th and Rackley launched her second.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Rogers singled and scored on Murray’s blast to center field. Freshman Kelly Cato doubled and scored on a double to right center by freshman Rudi Cantu to push the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second.
SFA scratched for a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Debra Boles, but UTSA responded behind an RBI double by Sitka that plated Murray and extended the lead back to three runs.
Crystal Garcia singled home Harper in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 4-2, but two-run round-trippers by Risberg and Rackley in the top of the fourth broke the game open.
Risberg and Rackley teamed up again the fifth on Rbi singles that pushed the lead to 11-2.
That was more than enough run support for junior right-hander Janeille Nickels, who allowed just two runs on five hits to move to 11-10 on the year. Boles gave up eight runs on 13 hits in falling to 0-3.
Risberg led UTSA in game one with two hits and two runs scored, including her 11th home run of the season, while fellow senior Catherine Garza had a two-run double in the first, part of a three-run frame for the Roadrunners.
SFA rallied from three down to take a 4-3 lead in the third behind a three-run home run to right field by Jessica Tullos. The Ladyjacks tacked on a run in the fourth on an RBI infield single off the bat of Garcia.
UTSA responded with a pair of runs in the fifth on Risberg’s solo homer and an unearned run off the bat of Rackley, who plated junior Kourtney Jones ? who reached on a bunt single ? from third on an infield error.
SFA took a 6-5 lead in the sixth as starting pitcher Kari Hugie doubled and the pinch runner Meng moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and beat the throw home on a ground ball to second base off the bat of Harper.
Hugie allowed five runs ? four earned ? on six hits in running her record to 9-11. Junior Amanda Nikolenko struck out five, but gave up four earned runs on six hits in falling to 12-15.
Game three is set for noon Sunday.
