Texas State blanks UTSA in series opener

SAN MARCOS
– Texas State starter Ragan Blake tossed a four-hit shutout and led the Bobcats to a 4-0 victory against UTSA on Saturday night at Bobcat Field. The Roadrunners dropped to 18-21 on the season and 12-4 in SLC play, while the Bobcats improved to 16-17 overall and 6-7 in league play.

Blake, who fanned 10 Roadrunners, recorded her fourth shutout of the season and improved to 12-8. On offense, Karen Taylor drove in two, while Jetta Weinheimer and Alex Newton each had an RBI.

Senior Catherine Garza had two of the Roadrunners' four hits on the night, while freshman Rudi Cantu and senior Jessica Rogers had one hit apiece.

Junior Janeille Nickels (9-9) went two innings, allowing four runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Newton’s home run to left gave Texas State a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Bobcats extended their lead 4-0 on Taylor’s and Weinheimer’s back-to-back doubles in the bottom frame of the third.

UTSA threatened in the seventh when Garza stroke a one-out double to center. A Bobcat error then allowed freshman Krista Sitka to reach base and moved Garza to third. Junior Lindsay Perry drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Blake fanned Cantu to end the contest.

The three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
