PLANO, Texas – UTSA senior catcher Jessica Els has been named Aeropostale/Southland Conference Softball Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Els led a strong offensive showing at the plate by UTSA last week, batting .333 (6-for-18) with five of her six hits going for extra bases. In game one of a doubleheader at Texas Tech last Wednesday, she went 3-for-4 with all four runs batted in, slugging the game-winning three-run home run in the top of the seventh to propel UTSA to the 4-3 win. She had three extra-base hits in the Texas-Arlington sweep, including a solo home run and a two-run home run off Jill Garro in her first two plate appearances in Sunday’s 10-2 victory. For the year, Els is hitting .373 with a career-best 13 doubles and 12 home runs, while in SLC play she is batting .404 with eight two-baggers, eight long balls and 18 RBI.
Els helped UTSA capture its third straight SLC regular season crown with a 22-5 league mark. The Roadrunners are 33-12 overall and will face Nicholls State in the first round of the SLC Tournament on Friday, May 5, at 11 a.m. in Natchitoches, La.
