UTSA women’s tennis season comes to an end with a 4-3 lose to Sam Houston State at the SLC tennis tourney
ARLINGTON, Texas - The No. 4 seed Sam Houston State defeated the No. 5 seed UTSA women’s tennis team in a thriller, in the first round of the SLC Championship at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas. Due to rain in Arlington, the matches were two hours delayed and held indoors, starting off with the singles matches.
The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead after Karen Scida (right) at No. 3 position defeated Broke Mills 6-2, 6-2 of Sam Houston State. Lata Assudani at the No. 2 slot of the Bearkats, evened it up by a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Sandra Kukla, UTSA. At the first position Irina Sotnikova retook the lead, 2-1, for Sam Houston State after defeating Nathalie Wallin of the UTSA, 6-4 6-3.
Monika Drabkova (left) at the No. 4 position won the first set 6-1 against Emma Mcdougall, of Sam Houston State. McDougall was up 5-2 in the second set before Drabkova made a come back, and won the second set 7-5. In the third set, Drabkova made a 6-1 decision and evened the match up 2-2. Barbara Money gave the Roadrunners a 3-2 lead, by a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Peta Taylor of Sam Houston. Ana-Paula Soto fell 6-3, 6-0 against Cristina Flores at the No. 6 singles, which made the doubles the determining factor.
In doubles action, McDougall/Flores of the Bearcats took the lead, by winning 8-3 at the No. 3 slot against Drabkova/Soto. At the No. 1 double, Tanya Hasking/Mooney, dropped 8-4 against Sotnikova/Assudani. Kukla/Scida were up 6-3 against Mills/Taylor of Sam Houston before the match was stopped.
