KINGWOOD, Texas – UTSA freshman Laura Baker is in sole possession of first place after 36 holes of the Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship held Tuesday at Kingwood Country Club’s Forest Course (par 72 / 6,082 yards).

Baker entered Tuesday tied with Texas State’s Jennifer Crawford for the individual lead after both fired a one-over par 73 on Monday. Baker carded a two-over 74 today and holds a two-shot lead over Crawford’s 73-76=149 and a six-stroke advantage ahead of Lamar’s Therese Nilsson (78-75=153).

Baker overcame a three-over 39 on the front nine Tuesday, firing a one-under 35 on the back thanks in large part to birdies on the par-three 14th and the par-four 17th. Displaying steady play throughout the two rounds, Baker has a tournament-high 22 pars and is tied with three other players with six birdies.

“Laura came back from spring break dialed in to play,” head coach Holly Tothe said. “She is hitting the ball great and hitting a lot of greens. She made some great shots and sank some good putts today. I had a blast watching her.

“Laura was a very good high school player so even though she is a freshman, this is not surprising to me at all. She’s highly motivated right now so I believe she’ll be ready to play Wednesday.”

Behind Baker’s 147, UTSA, which is competing in its first season of women’s golf, has a firm grip on sixth place after 36 holes with a 336-329=665, 12 shots ahead of Nicholls State (677). Lamar turned in a tournament-low 307 on Tuesday to vault into first place at 629. Texas State is next at 642 in a bunched battle for second, followed by Louisiana-Monroe (643), McNeese State (645) and Sam Houston State (646).

Also for the Roadrunners, freshman Jenna Wessels stands tied for 19th at 83-83=166, while freshman Allie Jordan is tied for 28th at 85-87=172. Sophomore Michelle Kowalick is in 34th (95-85=180) and freshman Neely Hutchins is in 35th (95-98=193).

The final round tees off at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
