BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's tennis team improve to 4-1 in Southland Conference play Saturday, with a 5-2 win over the UTSA women's tennis team (8-7, 4-3 SLC) at the Cardinal Courts Saturday morning in Beaumont, Texas.
The Lady Cardinals started the match by sweeping the doubles point. Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander defeated Veronika Barbara Mooney and Tanya Hasking 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, Tanya Roberts and Pamela Martinez took out Karen Scida and Sandra Kukla 9-8 at No. 2 and Kendall Gibbs and Maria Guiterrez beat Ana Paula Soto Anton and Nathalie Wallin 8-3 at No. 3.
In singles competition Andrea Martinez knocked off Wallin 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Tanya Roberts defeated Karen Scida 6-4, 6-7 (0-4), 6-3 at No. 3, Pamela Martinez downed Drabkova 7-6 (4-0), 3-6, 6-2, and Maria Gutierrez took out Mooney 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5.
The Roadrunners collected wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, with Kukla (right) knocking off Shelander 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and Paula Soto Anton defeating Gibbs 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6. UTSA women's tennis team travel to Stephen F. Austin for a SLC match up on April 2 at 10 a.m.
