UTSA and Texas State battle for first place this weekend

SAN ANTONIO - First place in the Southland Conference is on the line as rivals UTSA and Texas State meet at Roadrunner Field for a three-game series this weekend.

Week In Review: UTSA outscored Stephen F. Austin in a three-game sweep, 27-7, last weekend at Roadrunner Field. Junior Catherine Garza led an impressive showing by going 5-for-8 with a triple, two home runs and three runs batted in. Right-hander Amanda Nikolenko continued her strong sophomore season with

No Place Like Home: UTSA has made Roadrunner Field a tough place to play for opponents. The Roadrunners are 40-4 (.909) at the facility over the past two seasons and have won 16 straight and 35 of their last 36 home games.

Going, Going, Gone: UTSA has led the NCAA in home runs per game in each of the last three seasons. The Roadrunners are off to a great start with 52 in their first 24 contests (2.17 per game). Dating back to the beginning of the 2003 season, UTSA has slugged an amazing 336 home runs in 188 games (1.79 average).

Secret Weapon: The Roadrunners have made a name nationally for their ability to hit the long ball. While UTSA still bats above .325 as a team, the pitching staff is turning heads this year. Senior Hope Ortiz, junior Ursula Mares and sophomore Amanda Nikolenko have keyed UTSA to a 2.66 team earned run average this year, including a sparkling 1.51 ERA in conference play.

SLC Accolades: UTSA has earned six Aeropostale/SLC Player of the Week accolades this season. Amanda Nikolenko has been named Pitcher of the Week three times. Senior Mel Torres and freshman Brittany Cantu earned Hitter of the Week honors on Feb. 14 and March 7, respectively, while Catherine Garza garnered this week’s hitting honor.
