LAKE CHARLES - The UTSA women's tennis defeated McNeese State Cowgirls in a thriller, 4-3 match on Match 14 in Lake Charles, La. With the loss, McNeese falls to 4-5 on the year and 1-2 in the Southland Conference; meanwhile, UTSA improves to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in league play.
McNeese won the doubles point with victories at the no. 1 and no. 2 doubles. Urska Dobersek and Ann Grobbelaar teamed up at no. 1 to defeat Barbara Mooney and Tanya Hasking 8-3. Noelia Furno and Madeleine Hakansson defeated Karen Scida and Sandra Kukla 8-3 at the no. 2 doubles match.
McNeese took a 1-0 lead into the singles matches but the matched evened at one all with UTSA's Hasking defeating Hanna Bihorac 6-0, 6-0 at the no. 5 singles. McNeese retook the lead at 2-1 with Hakansson's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Monika Drabkova at no. 4.
UTSA came back to win the next two matches to take a 3-2 lead. Sandra Kukla defeated Urska Dobersek 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at the no. 2 spot and Ana Paula Soto Anton defeated Natascha Jongeneel 7-6 (11-9), 6-2. McNeese's Noelia Furno evened the match at three all with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nathalie Wallin at the top singles spot.
The overall team victory was decided at the no. 3 singles where Karen Scida handed Ann Grobbelaar her first loss (7-1) of the season and second of her career. The loss ended Grobbelaar's 26 consecutive match winning streak dating back to last season with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory. Grobbelaar had a career record of 26-1 heading into the match. The Roadrunners return home for a SLC match up against Texas-Pan American Lady Broncs on March 18 at 10 a.m.
