SAN ANTONIO – Senior Andre Owens (right) led four Roadrunners in double figures but Ricky Woods and Quennell Green combined for 47 points to lead Southeastern Louisiana to a 95-82 victory over UTSA Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
Woods posted his 14th double-double of the season with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Green was 6-of-7 from behind the 3-point line en route to posting 20 points. The Lions improved to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the Southland Conference in winning their fourth straight meeting with the Roadrunners. They shot a blistering 64.6 percent from the field, hitting 31-of-48 field goals including 9-of-14 from behind the arc. The 92 points and 64.6 percent shooting were both opponent season highs against UTSA.
Owens poured in 20 points, his 10th 20-point outing of the season, and added four assists to lead the Roadrunners, who fell to 8-12 and 3-6. Freshman Eric Young reached double digits for the third straight contest with 15 points, while sophomore Roderick Rodgers nearly posted his second double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Nkem Ojougboh added 10 points, while junior Kurt Attaway and sophomore Abe Donlon pitched in seven apiece.
UTSA shot 56.7 percent from the field, draining 32-of-62 shots, but only hit 15-of-28 (53.6 percent) from the line.
Both teams shot well from the floor in the first half, but Southeastern Louisiana built a 31-24 lead on a Jonathan Walker free throw at the 7:28 mark. An Owens lay-up and a pair of free throws by Ojougboh cut the deficit to 31-28 with just under seven minutes left in the half.
Another Owens lay-up brought the Roadrunners to within 33-32 and a fastbreak slam dunk by Young gave UTSA its first lead (34-33) since the 16:04 mark.
The Lions quickly answered with a 5-0 run capped by a steal and a Green 3-pointer to take the lead right back, 38-34. Green’s fifth trey of the half and a fastbreak lay-in by Woods gave SLU a 43-36 lead with 2:50 to play until the break. Three Woods freebies pushed the lead to 10 and that margin would remain with the halftime score 50-40.
SLU shot 58.6 percent from the floor and UTSA 56.7 percent, but the difference was the Lions’ 6-of-9 performance from behind the arc compared to just 2-of-7 for the Roadrunners in the half.
The Roadrunners cut into the lead, pulling to within 57-50 on an Ojougboh jumper at the 14:03 mark. The Lions answered with a 5-0 run capped by a Michael Cyprien 3-pointer from the top of the key pushed the lead back to 12. Another Green trey, a Woods dunk and a Ray Cummings lay-up extended the lead to 69-52 with 8:28 left.
Ojougboh broke a four-minute scoring drought with a 3-point play at the 8:18 mark. A Rodgers lay-up brought UTSA to within 14, 83-69, with 3:59 to play. A pair of Attaway free throws at the 1:59 mark cut the deficit to 85-73 and another Rodgers lay-up made it 88-77 with 50 seconds to play, but SLU held on from there for the 95-82 victory.
The Roadrunners stay home to host McNeese State next Thursday, Feb. 9. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
