Roadrunners post 13 top-three finishes, break two school records at Tech 6-Way

LUBBOCK, Texas – Led by junior Morgan Moszee’s win in the women’s long jump and two record-breaking performances from the men, the UTSA men’s and women’s track and field teams posted 13 top-three finishes Saturday at the Texas Tech 6-Way held at the Athletic Training Center.

Moszee (right) leaped to a 19-11 ľ measure to lead a one-two UTSA finish in the women’s long jump as senior All-American teammate Ryanne Dupree was second with a 19-1 ˝ mark. Moszee also posted a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (37-1).

Senior Rob Stager broke the school record in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 53-7 ˝, finishing fifth overall. The 4x400m relay team of senior David Burnett and T.R. Sissel and juniors Scott Briscoe and Larry Brooks also got in on the record-breaking act, clocking a 3:13.85 to better the previous standard of 3:14.80 set by Matt Ellis, Sean Goetsch, M. Edwards and Leonard Byrd in 1996.

Brooks (left) also finished second in the 1,000m with a 2:30.98 clocking, while redshirt freshman William Vese was the 55m hurdles runner-up in 7.48. Vese also finished third in the triple jump (45-3 ľ).

The men turned in three runner-up showings on the day. Freshman Gaston Griffin led a strong UTSA effort in the 400 meters, finishing second in 47.58. Sissel and Briscoe were right behind him in third (48.81) and fourth (49.13), respectively, while  Burnett was sixth in 49.31.

Also for the men, sophomore Cedric Harris was third in the 200m with a 22.16 timing, while sophomore Steven Brown was third in the long jump with a 21-11 measure. Freshman Mthobisi Baloyi and junior transfer Benson Cheserek made their Roadrunner debuts by finishing third (4:16.82) and fourth (4:18.02) in the mile. Senior All-American Brandon Buteaux and freshman Carvey Evans both cleared 6-5 ˝ to tie for fourth in the high jump, with Buteaux also taking fourth in the long jump (21-0 ˝). Senior Bryan Wolfe was fifth in the long jump (20-8).

Back on the women’s side, senior Rita Lambert and junior transfer Hope Jimenez finished third (5:09.75) and fourth (5:12.84), respectively in the mile, while junior Veronica Silva placed third in the 1,000m in 3:02.40. Junior Diane Smith also posted a third-place finish in the 600 yards in 1:27.95. Sophomore Sonya Strya took fifth in the 20-pound weight throw (45-3 ľ) and the 4x400m relay took fifth in 3:57.01.

The Roadrunners return to the track next weekend with the women traveling to Albuquerque, N.M., for the New Mexico Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 28, and the men heading to Boise, Idaho, for the Boise State Athletes Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
