Former UTSA standout Michelle Cheatham named assistant softball coach

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA softball program announced Thursday the hiring of former standout Michelle Cheatham (McElyea) as assistant softball coach.

Cheatham’s hiring is effective immediately and completes the full-time coaching staff of three along with head coach Lori Cook and assistant coach Stephanie Hughes. Cheatham will work with pitchers and catchers and help with the infielders.

“I am very excited to be able to bring back a former standout athlete like Michelle,” Cook said. “She was a great student-athlete here at UTSA and set many records not only here but in the Southland Conference. Being in our program for four years, she will bring tremendous knowledge to our hitting philosophy.”

Cheatham was a four-year letterwinner for UTSA in 1999-2002, earning second team All-Southland Conference honors in 2000 and 2002 at catcher. She still ranks in the top 10 on 10 of UTSA’s single-season lists, including the school record for putouts with 455 in 2002. The Clear Lake, Texas, native also appears on 11 of the school’s career charts, including third with 37 home runs. Cheatham finished her stellar career with a .306 batting average, 127 runs, 208 hits, 35 doubles, 37 home runs, 52 extra-base hits, 126 runs batted in, 692 at-bats, 85 walks, 1,172 putouts and 247 assists.

“I am really excited to have the opportunity to come back and be a part of the UTSA softball program again,” Cheatham said. “It is a dream to be able to come back and coach at the school I played for. My husband and family have been very supportive in my decision. I am looking forward to the upcoming season with the team we have coming back.”
