UTSA women’s golf starts new era at Lamar Invitational Monday and Tuesday

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s golf team begins its inaugural season on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 19-20, competing in the Lamar Lady Cardinal Invitational at Brentwood Country Club in Beaumont, Texas.

Head coach Holly Tothe and the Roadrunners had originally scheduled the Lady Colonel Collegiate Classic for this week in Bay St. Louis, Miss., but host Nicholls State cancelled that event due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast. Lamar originally had the Lady Cardinal Invitational scheduled for the spring semester, but rescheduled the event due to the golf course damage inflicted by Katrina.

As a result, Lamar is hosting several other teams that were scheduled to play at Nicholls State's tournament. Besides UTSA and Lamar, the Lady Cardinal Invitational field includes Centenary, Louisiana-Monroe, Sam Houston State and Texas State. The six-team field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday for a 56-hole event. There will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Monday.

Women’s golf is one of two new sports added by the UTSA Athletic Department last fall (women’s soccer begins in fall 2006). Tothe’s initial group of six players is made up of Laura Baker (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS), Neely Hutchins (Castroville, Texas/Medina Valley HS), Allie Jordan (Monahans, Texas/Monahans HS), Michelle Kowalick (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins HS), Stephanie Perez (Friendswood, Texas/Clear Brook HS) and Jenna Wessels (Katy, Texas/Katy HS).
