Dupree, Moszee capture gold to headline day two at the SLC Outdoor Championships

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – UTSA junior All-American Ryanne Dupree captured her third career conference crown with a big victory in the heptathlon and sophomore Morgan Moszee  leaped to gold in the women’s long jump to headline day two action for the UTSA track and field teams at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.

Dupree entered day two with a 3,323-3,130 lead over Signe Vest of Sam Houston State and cruised to her first league title in the heptathlon. She scored 2,142 second-day points and finished with a personal-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying 5,465, breaking her own school record of 5,383 set last year at the Texas Relays. Dupree, who won the Drake Relays heptathlon for the second consecutive year two weeks ago, turned in performances of 19-8 ľ in the long jump, 102-0 in the javelin and 2:22.33 in the 800m.

Freshman Ashley Allen finished fourth with a personal-best 4,871 points as the Roadrunners scored 15 points in the heptathlon.

Moszee posted a personal-best and regional-qualifying 20-4 ˝ measure to win the long jump for her first career conference title. She bettered her previous best of 20-2 Ľ with a comfortable win over runner-up Stephanie Sowell (19-11) of Northwestern State. Dupree finished sixth in the event with a 19-1 Ľ mark.

On the men’s side, junior Bryan Wolfe led a 13-point barrage in the decathlon with a runner-up performance. He scored 6,730 points behind second-day marks of 15.28 in the 110-meter hurdles, 117-0 in the discus, 13-11 Ľ in the pole vault, 162-7 in the javelin and 5:16.04 in the 1,500m.

Freshman Geronimo Acuna finished fifth in the 10-event competition, scoring a season-best 6,211 points, while junior All-American Brandon Buteaux was eighth to give the Roadrunners 13 points in the event.

In the team standings after day two, the women are in third place with 37 points behind Sam Houston State (86) and Stephen F. Austin (74). The men are in sixth with 29 points as Stephen F. Austin leads that race with 73.5 points.

In other finals action, junior Karilyn Petty recorded a fifth-place showing in the 3,000m steeplechase with a career-best 11:38.71 clocking, while junior Natasha Ramos finished sixth in the shot put with a season-best 43-9 measure. Freshman Rikki Gray scratched a point with a 5-5 clearance in the high jump. For the men, freshman Steven Brown took sixth in the long jump with a 23-7 Ľ mark.

The Roadrunners showed their talent and depth in the preliminary rounds on the track as UTSA has 25 qualifiers for Sunday’s finals. The men have 15 of those, including getting the trio of Brown, senior Curtis Johnson and freshman Cedric Harris through in both the 100m and 200m. In the 400m, sophomore Scott Briscoe, junior David Burnett, the 400m indoor champion, and freshman Dominic Brown advanced, while the foursome of sophomore defending champion Larry Brooks, junior Justin Pitchford and freshmen Brian Weirich and Eric Miller made it through in the 800m. Juniors Marques Mitchell and T.R. Sissel qualified for the 110m and 400m hurdles, respectively.

On the women’s side, senior Rosalind Holmes was the top qualifier in the 100m and also advanced in the 200m along with Moszee. Sophomore Diane Smith and junior Meghan Chance are in the 800m final and junior Rita Lambert is in the final field for the 1,500m. Dupree and sophomore Lyndsey Sidney advanced in the 100m hurdles, while Disney and junior Demetria Holmes qualified in the 400m hurdles.

The final day of the SLC Outdoor Championships gets underway Sunday at 1 p.m. with the women’s discus and continues through approximately 8 p.m.
