SAN ANTONIO - Despite losing at the top two singles positions, the McNeese State Cowgirls were able to rally and score a 5-2 win over the UTSA Roadrunners in Southland Conference (SLC) women's tennis action on Thursday morning at the UTSA Tennis Center.
McNeese State, which owns second place in the SLC standings, improved to 16-3 overall with the win, 7-1 in conference play. UTSA lost for the the third straight time and is now 5-11 overall, 4-4 in the SLC.
The Cowgirls claimed the doubles point to open the match as Urska Doberesk and Magali Riseleo won 8-6 at No. 2 over Nadezda Rossikhina and Tonya Hasking of UTSA, while Marina Gando and Ann Grobbelaar won 8-2 at No. 3 over Ana Paula Soto Anton and Rachael Hansen. UTSA had won at No. 1 as Barbara Mooney and Massiel Martinez combined for a 9-8 win over Noelia Furno and Madeleine Hakansson.
UTSA opened strong in singles as Rossikhina won 6-2, 6-2 over Riseleo at No. 1, and Martinez scored a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Furno. McNeese State rallied to win the match as Doberesk defeated Mooney 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 3; Hakansson won 6-1, 6-1 over Hasking at No. 4; Grobbelaar won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 over Anton; while Gando won 6-3, 6-2 over Hansen at No. 6.
UTSA will return to action with the final home match of the regular season when they host Lamar on Saturday, April 9 at 10 a.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
