UTSA completes sweep with 4-1 win at Southeastern Louisiana

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Sophomore pitcher Ursula Mares hurled her 14th complete game of the year and junior Jenny Garcia went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to lead the UTSA softball team to a 4-1 victory at Southeastern Louisiana Sunday afternoon at North Oaks Park. The win gave the Roadrunners their second Southland Conference series sweep of the season.

UTSA improves to 26-14 overall and 10-4 in the league, one of at least two teams with just four conference losses pending Texas State’s (12-4) Sunday contest at Northwestern State. The Lady Lions fall to 13-18 and 7-8.

UTSA struck first with two runs in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles from junior Stacey Gillespie and Garcia and a deep flyout to right center off the bat of senior Krystal Gibson put runners at second and third with one out and chased Lions starter Devin King. Junior Mel Torres then laid down a perfectly-executed squeeze bunt to score Gillespie ahead of the pitcher’s throw home. Garcia scored on a sharp single to left from junior Jessica Rogers.

Garcia drilled her third home run of the series and seventh of the season in the fourth, a two-run shot to left that scored sophomore Catherine Garza, who reached on a double to left center.

The game turned into a pitcher’s duel at that point as SLU reliever Rachel Ray retired the last 10 Roadrunner batters in order. Meanwhile, Mares sent down 12 of 13 until the bottom of the seventh when the Lions rallied for one run on three hits. She improves to 13-6 on the season and 5-1 in conference, striking out six and allowing one run on five hits in the complete-game victory.

Garcia led the UTSA offense with two hits, bringing her weekend total to seven, while Torres and Rogers added one RBI apiece. Lisa Chapman led the Lions with a 2-for-3 outing.

The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, April 6, when they travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
