Game 1 Box Score   |   Game 2 Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Seniors Krystal Gibson and Jennifer Davis drove in three runs apiece to lead the UTSA softball team to a 12-3 win at Texas State in game two of a doubleheader Friday night at Bobcat Field. Junior Jessica Rogers went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead UTSA in game one, but Ashley Wilson hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to win it for the Bobcats, 5-3.

With the split, UTSA moves to 23-14 overall and 7-4 in the Southland Conference. Texas State goes to 16-18 and 10-4.

Gibson and Davis led a 13-hit attack that saw seven different Roadrunners collect at least one hit in game two, while sophomore pitcher Ursula Mares was solid on the circle in earning her 11th victory of the season.

UTSA blasted out of the gates in the nightcap on the strength of the long ball, taking a 5-0 lead after two innings. Davis lined a one-out home run over the center field fence in the top of the first that scored Gibson, who reached on a single to right.

Gibson got in on the fun with a three-run blast to center in the second that scored junior Stacey Gillespie, who reached on a single, and sophomore Ashley Long.

The Bobcats got on the board in the second with a two-run home run to left center by Kristin Gunter to pull within three at 5-2. A solo home run by Holly Britain in the bottom of the fourth made it 5-3.

Following a scoreless fifth, UTSA broke the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs with two outs. Junior Jenny Garcia singled and scored on a double to the fence in right center by sophomore Catherine Garza to push the lead to 6-3. Gillespie then reached on a throwing error on the infield that allowed Garza to score the seventh run from second. Long followed with her second home run of the day, a two run blast over the left field fence to extend the lead to six at 9-3.

UTSA tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Mel Torres doubled to the gap in right center and junior Amanda Horton dropped a pinch-hit single in front of the third baseman to put runners on first and third with no outs. Davis then lifted a double to left center to score Torres. After a couple of groundouts, Garza plated Horton on an infield single and Gillespie sent home Davis on a single through the left side to push the advantage to 12-3.

Mares struck out four and allowed three runs on four hits in running her record to 11-6 on the year. Sarah Lancour gave up 10 runs on nine hits in falling to 2-1.

Texas State scratched first in game one as Britain hit a solo home run over the fence in left field for a 1-0 lead.

UTSA knotted the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the fourth. Gibson led off with a double to the wall in right center, advanced to third on a groundout to the pitcher and scored on a single to short left by Rogers.

The Bobcats grabbed the lead back in the fifth as Amy Hromadka and Amy Krueger led off with back-to-back singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Ann Trahan. Hromadka then scored on a wild pitch with Wilson at bat.

The Roadrunners answered with a deep home run that stayed just inside the fair pole in left field off the bat of Long.

Texas State threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Krueger drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a wild pitch, but reliever Hope Ortiz struck out Wilson to force extra frames.

The Bobcats again threatened in the bottom of the eighth but a nice running catch of a line drive off the bat of Leslie Sharp by Long stranded runners at second and third.

UTSA took its first lead of the game with a run in the top of the ninth. Torres singled, advanced to second on an error and scored on a single to center by Rogers to put the Roadrunners up, 3-2.

An error, a single by Krueger and a fielder’s choice put runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth for the Bobcats. Wilson then won it with her three-run shot to left center.

Trahan struck out 12 and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in improving to 14-13 on the season. Ortiz struck out three and gave up three runs on three hits in falling to 2-1.

Game three is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
