SAN MARCOS – Three, three-set singles match victories helped propel the UTSA women's tennis team to a 4-3 win at Texas State in Southland Conference tennis action on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, UTSA won its third straight match and improved to 5-8 overall and 4-1 in SLC action. Texas State is now 6-9 and 3-4.
UTSA won the doubles point as Nadezda Rossikhina and Tanya Hasking won 8-5 at No. 2 over Texas State's Margaret Potyrala and Leja Sirola, while Ana Paula Soto Anton and Rachael Hansen won 8-2 at No. 3 over Natalie McLeod and Sumarie Muller.
Texas State’s No. 1 singles player Leja Sirola posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Rossikhina. Both Texas State’s Melanie Hall at No. 2 singles and Margaret Potyrala at No. 3 won the first set of their matches but UTSA’s Massiel Martinez (5-7, 6-3, 6-4) and Barbara Mooney (4-6, 6-4, 6-4), respectively, would have comeback wins to secure the Roadrunners’ team victory. Freshman Tanya Hasking won convincingly at No. 4 singles by a 6-3, 6-4 count over Jana Cucciniello.
“After losing the doubles point, we came out strong in singles play,” said Texas State coach Tory Plunkett. “But we have never beat UTSA before and I think that history came into play and began to creep into our minds as the match went along. But I thought we fought as hard as we could and I have to praise our team for their effort.”
UTSA will return to action on April 2 when they travel to Sam Houston State.
