NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Senior Krystal Gibson and juniors Jenny Garcia, Mel Torres and Jessica Els collected two hits apiece and freshman pitcher Amanda Nikolenko picked up her ninth win of the season as UTSA cruised to a 7-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin Saturday night in game two of a Southland Conference doubleheader at Coy Simms Softball Complex. The Lady Jacks rallied late for a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in game one.
With the split, UTSA moves to 20-11 overall and 4-1 in the league, while SFA falls to 8-16 and 2-9.
After two scoreless innings in the nightcap, UTSA grabbed the first lead with a two-run third. Gibson reached after being hit by the pitch and Torres followed with an infield single. Both runners moved up on a groundout to first then Els followed with an RBI-single that plated Gibson, extending her hitting streak to six games. Sophomore Catherine Garza drove home Torres with the second run on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Roadrunners tacked on another run in the third on a solo home run to right center by junior Jenny Garcia to put UTSA up, 3-0.
SFA got on the board in the fifth as Jessica Tullos singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error on the infield to pull the Lady Jacks to within two at 3-1.
UTSA extended its lead to 7-1 with a four-run sixth. Back-to-back singles by junior Stacey Gillespie and Garcia and another hit by the pitch on Gibson loaded the bases with no outs. Torres then lined a double to the fence in left center that plated two to push the lead back to four at 5-1. Junior Jessica Rogers then drove home the third run of the frame with a sacrifice fly to right and senior Jennifer Davis plated Torres with a triple down the right field line.
Nikolenko struck out three and allowed two runs on six hits in running her record to 9-6 on the season. Julie Morse gave up three runs on four hits in falling to 3-5.
The Roadrunners jumped on the board quickly in game one as Davis stroked her seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot just inside the fair pole in left field that scored Torres and Gibson, who both reached on walks.
UTSA added a run in the fourth on an RBI-single to center by Gillespie that scored Els, who reached on a single.
SFA broke through for a run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run to left by Sara Hersey that cut the deficit to 4-1.
The Jacks knotted things up at 4-all in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits, the tying run coming home on a single by Tullos.
UTSA loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth, but a ground ball double play ended the threat.
Woydziak then led off the eighth with a bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on a squeeze bunt by Ragen Rutherford.
Nicole Carter struck out six and allowed just one run on seven hits in six and one-third in improving to 2-5 on the season. Nikolenko allowed the one run on two hits in the eighth in the tough-luck loss.
Davis led the UTSA offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Els also had two hits.
The rubber game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
