UTSA relay teams shine on day one of Whataburger/UTSA Relays

SAN ANTONIO – Both of UTSA’s 4 x 200-meter relay teams won their respective races to highlight day one action at the Whataburger/UTSA Relays on Friday at Comalander Stadium.

With Rosalind Holmes (Kerens, Texas) running a strong final leg, UTSA’s women ran a time of 1:37.43 to score a come-from-behind win over teams from Texas-Arlington, Texas State and Texas Lutheran. The UTSA men won the 4 x 200 in a time of 1:24.40.

Holmes also posted a provisional qualifying time of 11.51 in the prelims of the 100m dash, while teammate Morgan Moszee (San Antonio, Texas) was second in a time of 11.87.

In the men’s 100m prelims, UTSA had the top three times as Cedric Harris (Port Arthur, Texas) was first in a time of 10.49, while Steven Brown (Mesquite, Texas) was second (10.57), and Curtis Johnson (Pampa, Texas) (10.74) placed third.

UTSA claimed individual championships in the men’s 800m as Justin Pitchford (Hinton, Okla.) ran a time of 1:54.05, and in the 3000m as Jaziel Crisistomo (Austin, Texas) ran a time of 8:42.03. Lyndsey Sidney (Missouri City, Texas) won the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:02.92.

UTSA freshman Ashley Allen (Buffalo Gap, Texas) leads the heptathlon with 2,894 points after four events on Friday. Allen ran the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.37, had a high jump of 1.61 meters, shot put of 10.71 meters, and 200m time of 26.22. Signe Vest of Sam Houston State was second with 2,873 points.

Competing unattached, UTSA alumnus Justin Youngblood is first after five events in the decathlon with 3,515 points. He is followed by UTSA junior Bryan Wolfe (Raymondville, Texas) who has 3,452 points, while Geronimo Acuna (Orange Grove, Texas) is third with 3,180 points.

Karilyn Petty (Fredericksburg, Texas) placed third in the finals of the women’s 3000m with a time of 11:00. Jodi Hulett of Texas-Arlington won the race with a time of 10:36.30.

Final day action at the Relays will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
