HOUSTON – Senior Jennifer Davis had a home run and a triple and freshman pitcher Amanda Nikolenko tossed a two-hitter to lead the UTSA softball team past Texas Southern, 8-0, in five innings Saturday night at the Hyatt Regency Cougar Classic held at Cougar Field.
With the win, UTSA improves to 14-8 overall and 3-1 in the tournament. Texas Southern falls to 0-7 and 0-3.
Davis hit one of the team’s four home runs and drove in another run on a triple, while juniors Mel Torres and Jenny Garcia also contributed two hits apiece.
Nikolenko struck out just one batter, but allowed only two hits and no walks in improving to 8-4 on the season. Alexia Acosta (0-3) took the loss for the Tigers.
The Roadrunners did not waste any time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Garcia singled through the left side of the infield, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Davis’ first triple of the year over the right fielder’s head. Davis came home on a sacrifice fly to center by sophomore Aimee Murray.
UTSA struck for four runs in the third, all via the long ball. Garcia led off with a solo blast to left center to extend her hitting streak to eight games and Davis followed with a solo shot deep over the center field fence. Murray singled up the middle to extend her hitting streak to a season-best nine games and scored on a two-run bomb off the scoreboard in right field by junior Jessica Els.
The Roadrunners ended the game with the eight-run rule in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Ashley Long drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by junior Krystal Guevara. Sophomore Catherine Garza then finished off the Tigers with a solo shot to right for the final 8-0 tally.
Last year, UTSA twice tied the NCAA single-game record for home runs in a game with eight in both games of a doubleheader against Texas Southern. The Roadrunners then broke the record with 10 against the Tigers in Houston one week later. UTSA now has 30 home runs in the last four games against TSU.
The Roadrunners conclude the tournament against Western Michigan on Sunday at 10 a.m.
