UTSA opens conference play with 4-3 win over Northwestern State

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UTSA doubles combination of Barbara Mooney and Massiel Martinez persevered for a 9-8 (4) victory at No. 1 doubles as the Roadrunners opened Southland Conference play with a 4-3 win over the Northwestern State Demons in a match played outdoors at the UTSA Tennis Center and indoors at the Thousand Oaks Racquet Club.

UTSA, which improved to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play, claimed the doubles point as Tanya Hasking and Nadezda Rossikhina won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles over Northwestern State's Catalina Villegas and Ann Silva. Mooney and Martinez' win came at the expense of the Demons' Anneline Zerwick and Alexandra Nieto.

The Roadrunners had earlier claimed three singles wins as Rossikhina won at No. 1 with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Zerwick, while Chantal Lesaar won at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Silva, and Hasking prevailed 6-2, 6-1 over Nieto at No. 5.

Northwestern State fell to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in SLC play.

The Roadrunners will return to action on Sunday, March 6 with an 11 a.m. match against Louisiana-Monroe at the UTSA Tennis Center.
