SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when they host New Mexico State on Monday, Jan. 3. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

Opponent:
New Mexico State Aggies (4-7)

Series History:
After not playing New Mexico State in the first 22 years of the program, UTSA and the Aggies will meet for the second time in the last two years. In the only other meeting between the two schoools, New Mexico State defeated UTSA 62-53 last season in the first round of the Gossner Foods Classic in Logan, Utah.

Last Game:
UTSA stunned No. 15 Texas and led 70-66 with 12:14 to play before losing steam and dropping a 100-82 decision to the Longhorns on Dec. 29 in Austin. Senior guard Justin Harbert led the way with a career-high 25 points that included five 3-point field goals. Harbert came off the bench to score 21 points in the first half alone.

The Coach:

Tim Carter is in his 10th season at UTSA and has a career record of 138-127 (.521) with the Roadrunners and 149-143 (.510) overall . . . He is the winningest men's basketball coach in UTSA history and has the longest tenure . . . He scored his 100th career win on Dec. 1, 2001 over Illinois State and his 100th win at UTSA on Feb. 4, 2002 at Texas-Arlington . . . Carter was named the 1999 SLC "Coach of the Year" . . . He came to UTSA after one season at Nebraska-Omaha. He has served as an assistant coach at Oklahoma (1984), Midwestern State (1984-86), Houston (1986-87), Oklahoma State (1987-90) and Northwestern (1990-94) . . . He has led UTSA to the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and 2004.

The Matchup:

This will be the second game between the two schools, with New Mexico State winning last season in the only previous meeting by a 62-53 count in the first round game at the Utah State Gossner Foods Classic on Dec. 29, 2003. New Mexico State closed the game on a 12-3 scoring run to claim the win. John Millsap led UTSA with 13 points.

Homecoming Of Sorts:

New Mexico State assistant coaches Tony Stubblefield (1995-96) and Chris Crutchfield (1996-97) both spent time in San Antonio as assistants under Tim Carter with the Roadrunners.

Home Sweet Home:

Tough to beat in the UTSA Convocation Center, the Roadrunners have an all-time home record of 213-86 (.715) in the Convo. UTSA is 1-1 all-time in the Alamodome.

Working Overtime:
UTSA enters to 2004-05 season with a reputation as team that is tough in overtime. The Roadrunners are 12-7 all-time in extra session games under coach Tim Carter, and have won nine of the past 10.

Second Half Scoring Outbursts:

UTSA has enjoyed second halves this season in terms of scoring points. The Roadrunners average 39.0 points per game in the final 20 minutes of each game. Unfortunately for UTSA, opponents are averaging 40.4 per game in the second half.

UTSA Faces Tough Schedule:

According to the Sagarin College Basketball Rankings, UTSA has played the third toughest schedule of all NCAA Division I schools after the game with Texas. UTSA is currently ranked No. 123 overall.

Injury Report:

Point guard Kurt Attaway is sidelined with an injured right thumb (torn ligament suffered on Dec. 12) and will be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Harbert On A Roll:
Senior Justin Harbert, who was academically ineligible for the first six games, has returned to the lineup with a bang, averaging 18.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in the last three games at Kansas State, Wichita State and Texas. With 11 3-point field goals in those three games he already ranks second on the team in that category. He had a career-high 25 points at Texas, including 21 in the first half. Harbert, a 6-1 guard, appeared in all 33 games last season, averaging 10.5 points per game and he led the Roadrunners with 63 3-point field goals.

Sign 'Em Up:
Recently UTSA announced that four players had signed national letters of intent to play for the Roadrunners next season. The signees include three incoming freshmen and a junior college transfer. Signing with UTSA are 6-6 forward Kyile Byrd from Lon Morris (Texas) Junior College; 6-1 guard Tim Maiden and 6-9 center Nkem Ojougboh from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Christian Academy; and 6-4 guard Eric Young from Eisenhower High School in Houston, Texas.

Up Next:
UTSA will open Southland Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 6 at Louisiana-Monroe. The game at Ewing Coliseum will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
