UTSA hosts Texas Lutheran in first-ever meeting Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO - Fresh off a convincing 86-54 victory over Texas-Tyler on Sunday, the Texas-San Antonio men's basketball team hosts Texas Lutheran on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

UTSA opened the regular season with an 84-56 home win over Texas-Tyler on Nov. 21. Ray Selvage led a balanced scoring attack with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double. David President also scored 13 points, while Rapheal Posey added 12, and Andre Owens, 11. UTSA, which never trailed in the game, out-rebounded Texas-Tyler 50-24.

The Coach:
Tim Carter is in his 10th season at UTSA and has a career record of 135-122 (.525) with the Roadrunners and 146-138 (.514) overall . . . He is the winningest men's basketball coach in UTSA history and has the longest tenure . . . He scored his 100th career win on Dec. 1, 2001 over Illinois State and his 100th win at UTSA on Feb. 4, 2002 at Texas-Arlington . . . Carter was named the 1999 SLC "Coach of the Year" . . . He came to UTSA after one season at Nebraska-Omaha. He has served as an assistant coach at Oklahoma (1984), Midwestern State (1984-86), Houston (1986-87), Oklahoma State (1987-90) and Northwestern (1990-94) . . . He has led UTSA to the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and 2004.
The Matchup:
This will be the first ever meeting between UTSA and Texas Lutheran. The Bulldogs are coached by former Roadrunner center Tom Oswald, who played at UTSA from 1992-96. Oswald, who played in 107 career games for the Roadrunners, currently stands No. 36 in all-time scoring at UTSA with 504 points and No. 14 in rebounding with 370. He has been coach at Texas Lutheran for four-plus years and has a record of 51-51 while in Seguin.
American Southwest Conference:
The game with Texas Lutheran will be the second straight for UTSA against a team from the American Southwest Conference. Texas-Tyler, which UTSA defeated 84-56 on Nov. 21, also plays in the ASC.
Home Sweet Home:
Tough to beat in the UTSA Convocation Center, the Roadrunners have an all-time home record of 210-86 (.709) in the Convo. UTSA is 1-1 all-time in the Alamodome.
Working Overtime:
UTSA enters to 2004-05 season with a reputation as team that is tough in overtime. The Roadrunners are 12-7 all-time in extra session games under coach Tim Carter, and have won nine of the past 10.
Sitting Out:
Senior Justin Harbert has been ruled academically ineligible for games played during the fall semester.
"Justin cannot be certified as eligible until fall semester grades have been officially posted in December and his situation reviewed at that time," said Jeff Konya, UTSA's assistant athletic director for compliance.
Harbert, a 6-1 guard, appeared in all 33 games last season, averaging 10.5 points per game and he led the Roadrunners with 63 3-point field goals.

Injury Report:
Both Kurt Attaway (sprained ankle) and James Peters (concussion) did not play in the Nov. 21 game with Texas-Tyler. Both will be game time decisions for the Texas Lutheran game.
Sign 'Em Up:
Recently UTSA announced that four players had signed national letters of intent to play for the Roadrunners next season.
The signees include three incoming freshmen and a junior college transfer. Signing with UTSA are 6-6 forward Kyile Byrd from Lon Morris (Texas) Junior College; 6-1 guard Tim Maiden and 6-9 center Nkem Ojougboh from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Christian Academy; and 6-4 guard Eric Young from Eisenhower High School in Houston, Texas.
Byrd, a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, averaged 10.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as a freshman last season at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas.
Maiden, a point guard, averaged 12.0 points and 4.0 assists per game as a junior at Scottsdale last season. He formed half of a significant one-two punch for Scottsdale Christian along with Ojougboh, who averaged 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Young, who was recently rated the 48th best player in the State of Texas by Texas Hoops magazine, averaged 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game as a junior last season at Eisenhower.
Up Next:
UTSA will remain at home and play Texas A&M International on Sunday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the UTSA Convocation Center. It will be the first-ever meeting between the Roadrunners and Dustdevils.
