UTSA men’s basketball scores 82-58 exhibition win over Schreiner
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Freshman Roderick Rodgers scored 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to help lead UTSA to an 82-58 exhibition win over the Schreiner Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners placed four players in double figures as freshman Abe Donlon led the way with 13 points, while David President added 12 and Kurt Attaway, 11. Junior Ray Selvage made his Roadrunners debut with eight points and eight rebounds.
“I was pleased with how some of our young guys responded in their first game,” said UTSA coach Tim Carter. “The defense wasn’t there like I wanted it to be and that is something we will certainly work on for the regular season opener.”
Schreiner was led by Justin Evans with 15 points, while Lance Hrncir added 11.
UTSA trailed only once in the game when Hrncir opened with a 3-point field goal to make it 3-0. The Roadrunners broke away from a 10-10 tie with a 28-9 run and led 38-19 on two free throws by Dwain Hall with 2:01 to play in the first half.
Shooting 14 of 27 (51.9%) UTSA led 43-26 at halftime as Attaway had nine points, and Selvage, seven.
Schreiner never seriously threatened in the second half as UTSA built as much as a 29-point lead 82-53 with 35 seconds remaining.
UTSA dominated the glass by a 52-20 advantage over the Mountaineers and also forced 22 Schreiner turnovers
The Roadrunners will now prepare for the 2004-05 season-opener on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2:30 p.m. against the Texas-Tyler Patriots.
“We had some guys step up today when we needed them,” Carter said. “We will need more of that when we open on the 21st.”
