UTSA Men's Track and Field inks eight to National Letters of Intent

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA men's track and field program has signed eight to National Letters of Intent, bringing the 2003-04 signing list to 10, head coach Aaron Fox announced Wednesday.

The spring signees are Steven Brown (Mesquite, Texas/Horn), Jaziel Crisostomo (Austin, Texas/Westlake), Cedric Harris (Port Arthur, Texas/Memorial), Edwin Melendez (El Paso, Texas/Parkland), Nick Perez (San Antonio, Texas/Madison), Justin Pitchford (Hinton, Okla./Hinton/Butler County [Kan.] CC), Michael Schwartz (Keller, Texas/Keller) and William Vese (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik).

"We started out this class with two good signees in the fall that we knew would be an excellent foundation," Fox said. "We built off that foundation with a quality spring group that will help us take this program to the next level."

Brown is a sprinter/jumper from Mesquite Horn High. He qualified for the 2004 UIL State Meet in the 200 meters with a runner-up finish (personal best 21.69) at the Region II-4A meet. Brown also posted prep bests of 10.6 in the 100m and 23-1 in the long jump.

Crisostomo broke a 21-year-old Austin Westlake High School record in the 3,200m (9:29) and was a five-time district champion in cross country and track. He finished 30th at the 2002 Texas 5A state cross country meet and posted prep bests of 4:28 in the 1,600m, 9:29 in the 3,200m and 15:18 in the three-mile.

Harris was one of the top sprinters on one of the top track programs in Texas at Port Arthur Memorial. He was a state qualifier with the Titans' 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams and finished second in the 100m at the 2003 USATF Junior Olympics. He posted prep bests of 6.95 in the 60m, 10.51 in the 100m and 21.52 in the 200m.

Melendez was a top performer in the hurdles and jumps at El Paso Parkland, qualifying for the state meet in the 300m hurdles as a senior where he finished fifth in 39.79. He registered prep bests of 14.21 in the 110m hurdles, 38.2 in the 300m hurdles, 22-5 in the long jump and 46-10 in the triple jump.

Perez was named the 2003 San Antonio Express-News Cross Country Runner of the Year in his senior season at Madison High. He finished seventh at the Class 5A state cross country meet and turned in prep bests of 4:23 in the 1,600m, 9:26 in the 3,200m and 15:43 in the 5,000m.

Pitchford was a four-time state champion in the 800m at Hinton (Okla.) High School. He set Oklahoma high school state records in the 800m and 1,600m and went on to Butler County Community College in Kansas where he earned NJCAA All-America honors in the 800m. Pitchford owns bests of 48.1 in the 400m, 1:50.03 in the 800m and 4:27 in the 1,600m.

Schwartz was named second team all-area in cross country by the Dallas Morning News as a senior at Keller High. He posted prep bests of 4:29 in the 1,600m, 9:48 in the 3,200m, 14:58 in the three-mile and 16:06 in the 5,000m.

Vese was a standout hurdler and sprinter at Alief Elsik High in Houston. He recorded prep bests of 13.78 in the 110m hurdles and 46-8 in the triple jump and has made appearances on dyestat.comhttp://dyestat.com's Elite Performances list.

UTSA also signed two athletes in the fall - Geronimo Acuna (Orange Grove, Texas/Orange Grove) and Luke Johnson (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo).
