Texas-Arlington edges past UTSA in nine innings, 2-1

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO — Amanda Haney’s double to the left field wall in the top of the ninth inning helped propel Texas-Arlington past UTSA, 2-1, on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.

With the win, UTA improves to 7-12-1 and 3-2 in the Southland Conference. Despite the loss, UTSA is off to its best 20-game start since the 1998 team went 15-5 at 13-7 overall and 5-1 in the league.

In a pitcher’s duel between UTSA freshman Ursula Mares and UTA’s Lauren Hebert, the two teams combined for just three runs and 12 hits after lighting up the scoreboard for 18 runs in a doubleheader on Saturday. Mares scattered five hits and two runs over nine innings, striking out eight batters, while Hebert allowed just one run on seven hits and also struck out eight. Hebert improves to 1-2 on the year with the win, while Mares falls to 9-5.

The Roadrunners struck first in the bottom of the second inning when senior Tammy Nelson singled home junior Jennifer Davis to put UTSA up 1-0. That lead lasted until UTA’s Beverly Rowan tied the score at 1-1 with a solo home run to left field in the top of the fifth.

After three more scoreless innings, the Mavericks were able to push a run across in the top of the ninth on Haney’s double to left that scored Autumn Petrino, who led off the frame with a walk.

UTSA mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth as freshman Catherine Garza provided UTSA with a baserunner with two outs on a single up the middle. Hebert was able to retire the next batter on a sharp ground ball to first base, ending the threat and the game.

The Roadrunners stay home to host Houston in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 10, at Roadrunner Field, before traveling to Austin, Texas, to face No. 19 Texas on Thursday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m.
