Roadrunners sweep doubleheader from Texas-Arlington, 6-3, 5-4 Game 1 - UTSA 6, UTA 3 Game 2 - UTSA 5, UTA 4
SAN ANTONIO — Led by timely hitting and solid pitching from freshman Stevi Simpson, the UTSA softball teams swept a doubleheader from Texas-Arlington, 6-3, 5-4, on Saturday at Roadrunner Field. The Roadrunners improve to 13-6 on the season and 5-0 in the Southland Conference, while the Mavericks fall to 6-12-1 and 2-2.
UTSA won game one, 6-3, scoring all six runs on homers by sophomore Jessica Rogers, junior Krystal Gibson and senior Christy Brownlee.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Roadrunners continued their success of scoring early runs with a two-run homer down the right-field line by Rogers, her sixth of the year, that scored sophomore Jenny Garcia, who had reached on a single to center field.
UTA tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning on a two-RBI single by Dee Jay Nelson.
UTSA would answer with a three-run long ball by Gibson, her fifth of the season, in the bottom of the fourth, taking an 0-2 pitch deep to right center. Brownlee added her ninth home run of the season in the next frame, a solo jack off the scoreboard in left-center field, to increase the lead to 6-2.
The Mavericks scratched for one run in the sixth inning on an RBI single to left by Falon Kwasnick, but that was as close as UTA would get.
Freshman Ursula Mares started and earned the win, allowing six hit and two runs over five innings of work. Simpson came in for the last two innings, giving up just one run on two hits. Mares improved to 9-4 on the year and 4-0 in the SLC with the victory.
In the second game, a late rally by UTA cut a 5-1 UTSA lead to 5-4 but the Roadrunners held on for their fifth conference win behind solid pitching and several key defensive plays. Simpson scattered seven hits and four runs over seven innings to earn her fourth win of the year, while the UTSA offense was led by four-hit performance from Gibson and a three-RBI day from Rogers.
Again, the Roadrunners struck in the first inning. Gibson and Garcia led off with back-to-back singles and then Rogers lined a single to right field that scored Gibson.
UTA knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the third on an RBI single to center by Kwasnick. Rogers answered for UTSA in the bottom of the inning, drilling her second homer of the day and seventh of the season, a two-run shot over the left field wall to put the Roadrunners back up 3-1.
UTSA added two more insurance runs in the sixth on a two-RBI single by Gibson to right center that scored freshman Catherine Garza and senior Tammy Nelson, who had reached on her third double of the year.
The Mavericks made things interesting in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits to cut the lead to 5-4, but a groundout to freshman shortstop Aimee Murray ended the threat and the game.
The two teams will play game three on Sunday at 1 p.m.
