| Jan. 15, 2004 Southeastern Louisiana remains undefeated in conference play after 78-68 victory over UTSA HAMMOND, LA. – Michael Gardener led a balanced attack with 18 points and 11 assists as the Southeastern Louisiana Lions remained undefeated in Southland Conference play with a 78-68 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners on Thursday night at the University Center. UTSA, which fell to 5-10 and 0-2 in SLC play, was led by Justin Harbert and John Millsap with 15 points apiece, while LeRoy Hurd added 14 points and Kurt Attaway, 13. Millsap’s point total was a career-high, as was Attaway’s eight assists on the night. Southeastern Louisiana, which improved to 10-3 and 2-0, placed five players in double figures, as Amir Abdul-Rahim added 18 points, while Terry West scored 13. For the second straight game, UTSA never led in the contest and trailed early as Neill Berry had eight points for the Lions. Hitting on eight 3-point field goals, Southeastern Louisiana led 38-30 at halftime as Berry had 10 points to lead the way. UTSA could get no closer than six points in the second half as the Lions continued their hot-shooting from the floor. A 3-point shot by Gardener capped an 8-1 run by Southeastern Louisiana, giving the Lions a 46-33 lead with 17:38 to play. After UTSA cut the lead to 50-44 on a 3-point field goal by Harbert with 11:04 remaining, Southeastern answered with an 11-4 run to lead 61-48 on a West basket with 6:58 left. “I was impressed with Southeastern, I thought this was the best team that they have had since I have been here,” said UTSA coach Tim Carter. “We just couldn’t find an answer in stopping them. They hit a number of tough shots. We just have to start finding a way to win, starting on Saturday at Nicholls State.” Southeastern Louisiana connected on 26 of 52 (50.0 percent) shots from the field and 11 of 19 behind the 3-point line. UTSA shot 43.8% from the field and out-rebounded the Lions, 36-31. The Roadrunners will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17 with a 5 p.m. game at Nicholls State.
