Roadrunners solid on day one of UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO - A trio of Roadrunners have advanced to the singles flight finals and a pair of doubles teams got past the first round to highlight day-one action for the UTSA women's tennis team at the UTSA Invitational.
In singles flight play, junior Paula Erausquin (Salta, Argentina), freshman Tasja Fuhrig (Flensburg, Germany) and sophomore Nadezda Rossikhina (Volgograd, Russia) each won their first two matches to advance to their respective flight finals.
Erausquin downed Brooke Mills of Tyler Junior College in the second round, 4-6,6-2, 6-0, after receiving a first-round bye. Rossikhina posted straight-set victories over Elba Martinez of Laredo Junior College (6-3, 6-2) and Ina Wieding of Tyler Junior College (7-5, 6-3), while Fuhrig defeated Kalie Koenig of Lee College, 6-1, 6-0, and Lana Burton of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-3, 6-0. All three Roadrunners will play for their respective flight title on Saturday at noon.
In doubles action, Erausquin teamed with sophomore Barbara Mooney (LaPlata, Argentina) to beat Lee's Adriana Garcia and Koenig, 8-2, to move into the flight two semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m. Rossikhina and freshman Ana Paula Soto Anton (Mexico City, Mexico) registered an 8-3 win over Laredo's Amanda Benavidez and Celena Cortez to reach the flight three semis, also at 9 a.m. Saturday.
In other singles action, junior Massiel Martinez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) beat Lee's Lauren Janak in the first round, 6-0, 6-3, before dropping her second-round match to Catalina Castillo of Tyler, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. She will face Julie Fife of Texas-Pan American in the third-place match on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Mooney blanked Laredo's Benavidez, 6-0, 6-0, before losing to Tyler's Marissa Brown, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, while Soto beat Lee's Garcia, 6-1, 6-1, but fell to Wyoming's Andrea House, 6-2, 6-3,in the second round. Both will play third-place matches on Saturday.
The UTSA Invitational gets underway Saturday at 9 a.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center. Admission is free. |
