SAN ANTONIO — Sophomore Jordan Sims led four Roadrunners in double figures with a career-high 14 points and UTSA used a 23-0 run to start the second half to cruise past Cameron, 76-48, on Sunday at the Convocation Center.
Sims scored all 14 of his points in the second half, as he drained four 3-pointers in his career performance, while junior Kannon Burrage posted 13 on the strength of three treys. Sophomore Jeromie Hill and senior Stephen Franklin added 11 and 10 points, respectively, to help UTSA improve to 4-3 on the season and 4-0 all-time against the Aggies (3-3).
The Roadrunners forced 24 turnovers — 10 on steals — and scored 26 points off those miscues. UTSA also received 39 points from its bench and shot 85.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Meanwhile, Cameron shot just 36.2 percent, including 5-for-18 from beyond the arc, and made its only free-throw attempt. Vinicius Telo led the Aggies with 13 points and seven rebounds.
UTSA quickly erased a 29-28 halftime deficit by scoring 23 unanswered points to start the second half. Franklin had eight points during the run, while the Roadrunners tallied 11 of the points off nine Cameron miscues during the nine-minute stretch.
A 3-pointer by Telo at the 10:56 mark finally stopped the Aggies’ drought, but Sims answered with a pair of treys over the next three minutes to help push the lead to 59-34. The lead grew to 26 when Sims connected again from long distance to make it 62-36 with 6:23 to play.
UTSA led by as many as 30 and Cameron got no closer than 22 the rest of the way, as the Roadrunners cruised to victory against the NCAA Division II school from Lawton, Okla.
The Aggies stormed out to leads of 7-0 and 14-5, but the Roadrunners overcame the slow start and took a 20-16 lead after a 15-2 run spearheaded by 11 points on the strength of three 3-pointers from Burrage.
The Roadrunners will travel to the West Coast to face future WAC opponent San Jose State (2-3) at 9 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
