SAN MARCOS — UTSA won three events and posted a total of 12 top-three finishes at this weekend's Texas State Invitational.
Sophomore Mike Medrano was victorious in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:37.21. The Mission native defeated Texas State's Michael Morris by more than four seconds, while freshman teammate Harvinder Singh was third in 8:50.23.
Meanwhile, junior Darryl Wyrick easily won the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 51.95. His clocking was more than a half second faster than his nearest competitor and it was his second victory of the season.
The 1,600m relay quartet of Wyrick, freshman Christopher Hall, sophomore Keyunta Hayes and junior James Pailin also was victorious after circling the Texas State Track & Field Stadium oval four times in a season-best 3:08.81.
The Roadrunners also saw three athletes finish with silver medals in field-event competition.
Juniors Richard Garrett Jr. (58-9 ¼/17.91m) and Phil Steinert (180-8/55.07m) placed second in the shot put and hammer, respectively, while sophomore Kerry Thompson (6-8 ¾/2.05m) was runner-up in the high jump.
UTSA's other third-place performers included senior Cole Reveal in the 3,000m steeplechase (PR 9:23.85), senior Mike Sanchez in the shot put (PR 54-10/16.71m), junior Taylor Reed in the pole vault (16-6 ¾/5.05m), Garrett Jr. in the javelin (PR 175-9/53.58m) and Steinert in the discus (158-7/48.33m). Reed tied the program record he set a year ago for the second week in a row.
The Birds will return to action next Saturday, April 14, at the Texas Invitational.
