SAN ANTONIO — Junior Richard Garrett Jr. broke UTSA's discus record for the second consecutive year at the Texas Relays and the Roadrunners recorded 11 first-place finishes at the local Trinity Tigers Relays, including junior Taylor Reed's school record in the pole vault, to highlight this weekend's action for the men's track & field program.

Garrett Jr. added nearly two feet to the mark he established a year ago en route to his second silver medal in a row on Friday at the prestigious meet in Austin. The Garland native launched the platter 181 feet (55.18m) on his third attempt of the day, which broke the mark of 178-1 (54.29m) he recorded last April 8. His measurement now leads the Southland Conference and it also ranks among the top 20 nationally. Minnesota's Dominique Howard won the event with a toss of 181-7 (55.34m).

Meanwhile, fellow junior Tyler Williamson also recorded a personal best in the long jump after breaking the sand in a wind-aided 24-11 ¾ (7.61m) on Saturday at the Texas Relays. That mark was good for sixth in the field of 12 A-flight competitors and it not only leads the Southland, but it also ranks 10th in the nation this spring.

Reed led the contingent of gold medals on Friday at the Trinity Tigers Relays when he matched the program standard he set a year ago at the Trinity Alumni Classic. The Tyler native cleared 16-6 ¾ (5.05m) to lead a 1-2 UTSA finish in the event. Junior Kyle Tomasini was four inches behind his teammate with his personal-best clearance of 16-2 ¾ (4.95m), which ranks as the third-best performance in school history.

Other winners included freshman Christopher Hall in the 400 meters (PR 47.82), sophomore Chrisshun Jamerson in the 800m (1:53.38), senior Albert Cardenas in the metric mile (3:58.18), freshman Ryan Elizalde in the 5k (PR 15:22.33), sophomore Keyunta Hayes in the 400m hurdles (54.90), sophomore Kerry Thompson in the high jump (6-10 ¾/2.10m), junior Roscoe Robinson in the long jump (PR 24-4 ¼/7.42m), senior Daniel Rodriguez in the shot put (51-11/15.82) and junior Phil Steinert in the hammer (Southland-leading 191-11/58.50m). The 1,600m relay team of junior James Pailin, sophomore Joshua Smith, Hall and junior Darryl Wyrick also was victorious (3:13.69).

Hayes, who competed at both meets this weekend, moved to the top of the league leaderboard in both hurdle events with his season-best times at the Texas Relays. The Tyler native clocked a personal-record 51.17 (No. 3 UTSA history) for the fifth-fastest 400m hurdles preliminary heat time on Thursday and he came back the next day to run a windy 14.12 in the 110m hurdles prelims.

UTSA will return to action next weekend at the Texas State Invitational. The two-day meet gets underway on Friday, April 6, in San Marcos.
