Steve Lautz is UTSA’s senior associate director of athletics for compliance.
He joined the UTSA senior staff as the associate director for compliance in 2019 before earning a promotion in 2021.
He oversees UTSA’s comprehensive NCAA compliance program, including rules education, monitoring and reporting. The compliance team works directly with coaches, student-athletes, UTSA staff and the San Antonio community to promote a culture of compliance.
Lautz also functions as UTSA’s primary sport administrator for soccer and track & field and cross country.
A native of Madison, Wisc., Lautz joined the UTSA staff after serving on the compliance team at Auburn University from 2009-2019. He began his career working with the Auburn compliance team in 2009 before earning a promotion to associate athletics director in 2012.
While at Auburn, Lautz was responsible for several areas of NCAA and Southeastern Conference compliance, including certification of eligibility, rules education, camps and clinics, and time-management plans, as well as serving on the Athlete Agent Regulatory Commission for the State of Alabama.
Before joining the Auburn staff, Lautz worked in compliance at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee from 2003-09.
Prior to working in collegiate athletics, Lautz worked at the law firm of Bond, Schoeneck and King in Overland Park, Kan., representing colleges and universities in NCAA related matters.
He was a hockey student-athlete at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science and criminal justice. Lautz then earned a law degree from the University of Kansas.
