As Vice President for Student Affairs, Sam Gonzales oversees the major divisions of Student Affairs, Enrollment Services, and Intercollegiate Athletics which includes 19 distinct departments.  The Student Affairs division is responsible for managing over 300 million dollars in program funds and budgets.

Over his 40-year career at UTSA Sam has held leadership positions as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Administration and as Assistant Vice President of Student Services.  He also served in interim positions, including Vice President for Business Affairs and Assistant Vice President for Student Life.

He served nationally as president of the Cooperative Education and Internship Association and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Council on Student Affairs for the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities. Regionally he has served as treasurer of the Southwest Association of Colleges, locally as president of the San Antonio College and University Placement Association and chair of the financial aid committee for the Baumberger Endowment Agency.

Through his career, his teams have been honored with the Alcohol EDU national award for Excellence in Prevention Programming in 2007, the UTSA Richard S. Howe Excellence in Service to Undergraduate Students Award, and the UTSA Team Spirit Award.

He earned a Master of Education Degree in Psychology and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Our Lady of the Lake University.  Additionally, he was a Kellogg Fellow in Education Policy with the Institute of Educational Leadership at The University of Texas at Austin.

Sam and his wife Sylvia have two children who both earned degrees at UTSA.
