Pat Stangle enters his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Roadrunners volleyball team and is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing the team’s offensive and defensive systems, in addition to training the setters and outside hitters.
In his three seasons at UTSA, Stangle has helped guide the squad to a pair of regular season Conference USA titles, a conference tournament crown and a runner-up finish in 2015. He also played a key role in mentoring the program’s only three All-Americans in McKenzie Adams, Jessica Waldrip and Dajana Boskovic. Waldrip was also recognized as the Conference USA Setter of the Year in 2014 after helping the team to its second straight regular-season crown.
Since Stangle’s arrival, the program has shown continual progress and success. In 2013, the Roadrunners’ inaugural season in Conference USA, the team captured the regular-season title and went on to win the conference tournament leading the Roadrunners’ league-best offense to its third-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
The Roadrunners repeated as regular-season champions the following season and runners-up this past fall. Milestones continued to come during the 2015 season as the Roadrunners notched wins over three Power 5 Conference programs – Indiana, No. 12 Oregon and Clemson – a first in school annals.
Among the Roadrunners’ highlights from that season, UTSA eclipsed the team’s previous hitting percentage mark during opening weekend against Prairie View A&M with a .573 (49-6-75) attack percentage and almost two months later, Dajana Boskovic reached the 1,000th career kill mark in match against Charlotte.
Before coming to the Alamo City, Stangle served as an assistant coach for two seasons at Washington State, where he helped the Cougars transition from the Pac-10 to Pac-12.
He previously was the head coach at Wyoming for four years from 2004-07. Stangle won 50 matches during his tenure, including 26 in Mountain West Conference (MWC) play. Rachel Smith was named the 2004 MWC Co-Freshman of the Year and she went on to earn first-team all-league honors her final two campaigns. In his time in Laramie, the Cowgirl volleyball program finished higher in the league, and with more wins, than any previous team in school annals.
Prior to his stint at Wyoming, Stangle served as the top assistant at Washington from 2002-03 and helped the Huskies reach the Elite 8 in 2003. The core of the 2005 NCAA Volleyball National Championship team was recruited by Stangle, including current UTSA assistant coach Danka Danicic and former UTSA assistant Sanja Tomasevic.
He also was the head coach at Seward County (Kan.) Community College from 1997-2001 where he led the Lady Saints to 225 victories, a pair of Jayhawk Conference Championships, three consecutive NJCAA Region VI titles (1999-2001) and three appearances at the NJCAA Championship Tournament. Stangle coached 18 all-region players and six All-Americans during his time in Liberal, Kan.
Following the 2013 season, Stangle was inducted into the Seward County Community College Hall of Fame. He was the lone inductee in the 2014 class.
He began his coaching career at Central Christian College (Kan.) and led the program to its first two regional tournament appearances in program history.
The Spokane, Wash., native was inducted into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2008.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Hardin-Simmons in 1988 and an MBA from UTSA five years later.
Stangle is married to the former Melissa Peterson and the couple has three children, Casey, Haley and Doak.
