Malik Walker is in his third season on the UTSA staff and second as the assistant cornerbacks coach.
In 2024, Walker helped the Roadrunners to a seven-win campaign that was capped with a 44-15 victory over Coastal Carolina in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. He assisted with the development of cornerback Zah Frazier, who earned All-America accolades by two different organizations and first-team all-conference honors after setting the program record with six interceptions. Frazier went on to earn an NFL Scouting Combine invitation and was eventually selected by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.
Walker was a defensive analyst during his first season at UTSA, helping the Roadrunners to a 9-4 record and the program’s first-ever bowl win with a 35-17 victory over Marshall in the Frisco Bowl. The cornerbacks combined for 102 tackles, four interceptions and 30 pass breakups. Kam Alexander was the Frisco Bowl Defensive MVP and earned first-team all-conference honors after posting 34 tackles, 15 PBUs and a pair of picks.
Prior to his time with the Roadrunners, Walker was an assistant linebackers coach and graduate assistant at UIW for the 2022 season. The Cardinals won 11 games and reached the FCS quarterfinal round of the playoffs. He helped mentor linebacker Kelechi Anyalebechi to numerous accolades, including All-America, Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference.
Walker was the defensive back coach and special teams coordinator at Catoosa High School in Oklahoma in 2021, helped lead the team to the playoffs after a six-year drought. One of his players earned all-state honors at safety after leading the state in interceptions with nine.
He got his start in coaching in 2019 at Broken Arrow High School in Oklahoma. During his two years on the staff, he mentored two high school All-Americans and four all-district performers, helping guide the Tigers to back-to-back state semifinal appearances.
Walker was a star player from 2015 to 2018 at Central Oklahoma, an NCAA Division II program in Edmond. A two-year starter in the secondary, he was an all-conference selection and team captain who helped lead the Bronchos to three bowl victories.
He was a two-way standout and all-district performer at Spiro High School, helping lead the team to the Class 3A state playoffs as a senior. He also was an all-county pick in basketball and team MVP in track & field for the Bulldogs.
Walker earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and health from Central Oklahoma in 2018.
