Lionel Rice joined UTSA’s Sports Medicine Staff, as part of a partnership with UT-Health, in April 2019 and works primarily as an assistant athletic trainer for the UTSA football program.
Rice is a native of Bronx, N.Y., and graduated from King’s College in 2015 with his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. Rice was a four-year athlete for the Monarch football program and was awarded the King’s College Academic Athlete Award all four years.
In 2016, he graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Science in Athletic Training. With the Vulcans, he provided athletic training services to the football, ice hockey, lacrosse, rugby and club sports programs. Upon graduation, Rice was awarded the 2016 California University of Pennsylvania President’s Award.
Rice interned with the Minnesota Vikings throughout the 2016-17 season before moving on to work at Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla.
He returned to the NFL in 2018 to complete a seasonal internship with the Jacksonville Jaguars before arriving in San Antonio.
Rice has also gained other football experience on the sidelines of the XFL working as a gameday Athletic Trainer for the New York Guardians and as a volunteer medical staff for the NFL 7-on-7 Tournament.
He is certified in Personalized Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation and Sports and Orthopedic Regenerative Dry Needling Level 1, and HawkGrip Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization.
In his free time, Rice enjoys working out, playing video games, and enjoying time with his girlfriend, Olivia, as they prepare for the arrival of their son in August. Rice says his favorite superhero is his mom and Iron Man and his favorite villain is Thanos.
