One of the top middle distance runners to ever compete for UTSA, Katie Kelley (Poindexter) is in her first season as assistant women’s track and field coach. She oversees the Roadrunners’ middle distance and distance programs.

In her first season in charge of the cross country team, Kelley helped tutor Dana Mecke to All-Southland Conference honors with a sixth-place finish at the conference meet. Mecke tallied six top-10 finishes while splitting time with the volleyball team, while UTSA won the Ricardo Romo Classic team title for the second consecutive season.

Kelley came to UTSA from Terrell High School, near Dallas, where she was a teacher and a volunteer coach. Prior to her tenure at Terrell, she was a graduate assistant coach at Texas Tech while working on her master’s degree in physical therapy.

As a UTSA student-athlete, Kelley won the SLC Indoor 800 meters in 2003, qualified for the 800m finals at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships and was a member of the conference champion indoor distance medley relay team in 2002. She still holds UTSA records in the indoor 800m (2:06.05), indoor mile (4:50.73) and outdoor 800m (2:05.00). Kelley also ran on the record-setting 4x800m relay, which won the 2002 Texas Relays title with an 8:42.19 clocking. She was a cross country standout, finishing a career-best 11th at the 2001 SLC Championships. Kelley also competed in the 1,500m finals at the 2002 USA Outdoor Championships and the 800m semifinals at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships.

Also an accomplished student, Kelley earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from UTSA in 2003. She was the 2003 SLC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year and a three-time member of the SLC All-Academic Team.

A native of Seymour, Texas, she is married to Elliot Kelley and the couple has one daughter, Ellie.
