Former Rice standout Connor Teykl was added to the UTSA baseball coaching staff as the volunteer assistant on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018.

“I am excited to announce the addition of Connor Teykl to our coaching staff,” Marshall said. “Connor had a great career at Rice University, playing on some great teams and for one of the great coaches in college baseball history. Connor knows what winning in C-USA looks like and we are excited to have he and wife Kelli in the Roadrunner family.”

A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Teykl starred for the Rice Owls from 2013-16. He joins the UTSA coaching staff for 2019 after two seasons as an assistant at Galveston College.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be here at the University of Texas at San Antonio,” Teykl said. “It is an honor to get to work alongside Coach Marshall, Coach Blair and Coach Kieschnick. I can’t wait to meet the team and starting working towards a championship. My wife and I are excited to be in San Antonio and to start this new journey in our lives.”

During his playing days, Teykl led Rice to three Conference USA Championships. He helped lead the Owls to three NCAA Tournament appearances as a versatile defender, capable of logging defensive time anywhere on the field.

He played in 207 games at Rice, batting .274 with four homers and 90 RBI, ripping 29 doubles and two triples, while sporting a .350 career on-base percentage. As a freshman, Teykl was pressed into service after an injury to the everyday third baseman. He made 41 starts as a sophomore, before playing in 59 games each of his final two seasons. He hit .291 with two homers and 26 RBI as a junior and .284 with two homers and 28 RBI as a senior. Teykl was named to the NCAA All-Regional and C-USA All-Tournament Team in 2016. Teykl was also a two-way player in the summer collegiate league circuit, including the Northwoods League in 2013 and the California League in 2014.

Teykl played two seasons in independent baseball, including the 2016 in the American Association with the Lincoln Saltdogs and in 2017 with the River City Rascals and Florence Freedom in the Frontier League.

While at Galveston, Teykl worked directly with the outfielders and hitters, serving as the in-game, third-base coach. He has also served as the lead hitting instructor with DBat Katy throughout the summer. He also served as an assistant coach with Houston Christian High School.
