Christian Wood is in his second season as UTSA's basketball-focused strength coach and is in his fourth year as a member of the UTSA strength & conditioning staff.
Wood, a former all-conference basketball standout at crosstown Our Lady of the Lake University, became UTSA's basketball-specific strength & conditioning coach during the 2019-20 season. He is a daily fixture on the UTSA basketball staff, traveling to all events and assisting in the UTSA practice and strength & conditioning plan.
Wood previously served two years as a graduate assistant for the football strength & conditioning staff after a one-year internship with the program, where he has worked closely with more than 100 student-athletes on a daily basis under the direction of head football strength & conditioning coach Ryan Filo.
Wood got his start in the field as an intern with the U.S. Naval Academy’s football strength & conditioning staff in 2016. Later that year he was named the first-ever strength & conditioning coach at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio.
A native of Hallettsville, Texas, Wood played basketball for one season at Southwestern Assemblies of God in Waxahachie, Texas. He appeared in 38 games for the Lions and averaged 5.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest.
Wood then joined UTSA’s football program as a linebacker for the 2012 season before transferring to OLLU, where he was a three-year team captain for the basketball team. He garnered second-team All-Red River Athletic Conference accolades in 2014 and he was a two-time honorable mention all-conference performer and a RRAC All-Tournament Team selection in 2016. He averaged 7.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and registered 73 steals, 58 assists and 38 blocks during his three-year career with the Saints.
Wood earned bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice and kinesiology from OLLU in 2017.
Wood is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a member of the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and Certified Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA). He also has a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach Certification from USA Weightlifting (USAW).
