Barrick Nealy was named UTSA’s Director of Player Personnel in January 2020.

Among his many responsibilities with the Roadrunners are initial identification and evaluation of prospects, managing prospect video and database, oversight of the day-to-day recruiting operations, organization of recruiting events and material and assisting with roster management.

Nealy arrived in San Antonio after two seasons on the staff at UTEP. He spent one year as the Miners’ director of player development/high school relations before he was promoted to recruiting coordinator and senior player personnel director in 2019.

Nealy got his start in coaching in 2013 at San Marcos Academy, where he served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach through the 2016 season. He helped lead the team to the 2015 TCAL state championship.

While in San Marcos, Nealy also mentored and trained several local athletes, including former San Marcos High School football and baseball star David Hamilton, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the eighth round of the 2019 MLB Draft after a three-year career as the shortstop at Texas, and former San Marcos quarterback Prudy Calderon, who led the 2017 Rattlers to their first district title since 2003.

A former standout quarterback, Nealy played in four games at Houston in 2002 before transferring to Texas State for his final three seasons. He threw for 7,206 yards and 52 touchdowns in 35 starts (2003-05) with the Bobcats.

In 2005, under then-offensive coordinator and current Texas head coach Tom Herman, Nealy led Texas State to an 11-3 record, a share of the Southland Conference title and the semifinal round of the FCS playoffs. He was named 2005 Southland Player of the Year, first-team all-conference and second-team All-America after throwing for 2,875 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushing for 1,057 yards and 13 TDs. He still holds several of the program’s single-season records, including passing yards (3,129), total offense (3,932) and touchdowns responsible for (34).

Following his successful senior campaign in which he was fifth in voting for the Walter Payton Award for the most outstanding offensive player in FCS, Nealy played in the Hula Bowl and then signed a free-agent contract as a wide receiver with the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. Later that year, he inked a contract with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders, where he played quarterback for five seasons (2006-10).

A native of Dallas, Nealy earned his bachelor’s degree in applied arts and sciences from Texas State.
