Former UTSA football standout Carl Austin III is in his fifth year leading the sports performance program for UTSA women's basketball. He was promoted to assistant sports performance coach in June of 2022 after serving as an intern for the 2021-22 athletic season, working directly with women's basketball.
Austin, a native of Austin, Texas, and a former five-year member of the UTSA football program, has been elevated to assistant performance coach in the UTSA strength & conditioning department, with a focus on the women’s basketball and volleyball programs.
In 2021, Austin served as a strength & conditioning intern, working with the women’s basketball program.
Austin is a USAW Level I certified performance coach and holds his NASM CPT certifications.
During his career as a safety with the Roadrunners, Austin played in 47 games with 134 tackles, including 13.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. He had four pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. As a fifth-year senior in 2019, Austin started all 12 games and ranked second on the team with 67 tackles, including 7.5 behind the line of scrimmage.
He was a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and earned his bachelor’s degree in sport, event and tourism management in the summer of 2018. He is completing his master’s degree in public administration at UTSA.
He was a two-way star at St. Stephen’s Episcopal High School, where he also played basketball and ran track.
