Former UTSA football standout Carl Austin III is in his second year leading the sports performance program for UTSA women's basketball and his first directing the program for UTSA volleyball. He was promoted to assistant sports performance coach in June of 2022 after serving as an intern for the 2021-22 athletic season, working directly with women's basketball.

“I couldn’t be more excited to get to work,” Austin said. “Coach Ryan Filo and his staff are the best at what they do and to be at the same table with them is humbling but also a huge motivation for me. Working with Karen Aston and the women’s basketball coaching staff and Carol Price-Torok’s volleyball staff is a huge honor. Developing these young women both athletically and for life is a process I cherish. It truly makes me happy to be in this position because of all the blood, sweat and tears that I’ve poured into this university over my time as a student-athlete. I’m so excited to help these student-athletes achieve their goals and put them in a position to compete for championships.”

Austin, a native of Austin, Texas, and a former five-year member of the UTSA football program, has been elevated to assistant performance coach in the UTSA strength & conditioning department, with a focus on the women’s basketball and volleyball programs.

“Carl is a tremendous hire for our program,” UTSA women’s basketball head coach Karen Aston said. “We were blessed by his involvement in our program last year. His energy and work ethic is an amazing asset to our coaching staff. That combined with his knowledge and passion at helping our student-athletes improve makes him a perfect fit for our Roadrunner family.”

Last year, Austin served as a strength & conditioning intern that worked with the women’s basketball program.

Austin is a USAW Level I certified performance coach and owns his NASM CPT.

During his career as a safety with the Roadrunners, Austin played in 47 games with 134 tackles, including 13.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. He had four pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. As a fifth-year senior in 2019, Austin started all 12 games and ranked second on the team with 67 tackles, including 7.5 behind the line of scrimmage.

He was a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and earned his bachelor’s degree in sport, event and tourism management in the summer of 2018. He is completing his master’s degree in public administration at UTSA.

He was a two-way star at St. Stephen’s Episcopal High School, where he also played basketball and ran track.
