Alex Melendez was named the assistant strength and conditioning coach at UTSA in August 2019. He is currently the head strength and conditioning coach for UTSA volleyball and men’s and women’s golf while also assisting with UTSA football.
Melendez got his start in the field as a student-assistant at UTSA working with football, volleyball, track and field, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s soccer programs in the summer of 2015. Melendez then moved into a graduate assistant position in the summer of 2017 where he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the football program.
Melendez previously served two years as a graduate assistant for the football strength & conditioning staff after a one-year internship with the program, where he has worked closely with more than 100 student-athletes on a daily basis under the direction of head football strength & conditioning coach Ryan Filo.
A native of Pharr, Texas, Melendez earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology (2016) and his master’s degree in exercise science (2019) from UTSA.
Melendez is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a member of the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and Certified Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA). He also has a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach Certification from USA Weightlifting (USAW).
