Former two-time national champion and four-year starter at Penn State University, Dominique Gonzalez is in her third season as an assistant coach at UTSA.

Joining the Roadrunner family in March 2017, she is primarily responsible for the team defense and passing while working closely with the liberos and defensive specialists.

In 2018, Gonzalez helped direct the Roadrunners to a 19-win season and a second-place finish in Conference USA. She helped mentor libero Shelby Williams, in her first year as the everyday libero, to 4.22 digs per set to rank fifth in the league. The Roadrunners saw outside hitter Kirby Smith earn C-USA Freshman of the Year honors and Kara Teal and Amanda Gonzales earn all-league accolades. UTSA averaged 15.86 digs per set in 2018, third-best in the conference.

Gonzalez’s first year on staff saw the Roadrunners advance to the Conference USA Championship tournament for a fifth-consecutive year as UTSA went 9-5 in league play. Under Gonzalez’s direction, the Roadrunner defense ranked fifth overall in C-USA as UTSA averaged 14.79 digs per set. She also guided UTSA’s primary libero Emily Ramirez to an eighth-place conference ranking with 415 digs on the year.

Before returning to the Alamo City, Gonzalez spent one year at Kent State where she helped the Golden Flashes become one of the top defensive teams in The Mid-American Conference, primarily working with back row defenders and passers.

In her one season, she helped Kent State register the third-most digs in program history with 2,017 and guided the Flashes to a MAC season-high 114 digs in a five-set triumph over Miami that snapped the Hurricanes’ school-record 20-match win streak. At seasons end, the Flashes posted 16.67 digs per set, best for 35th in the nation and third in the MAC.

The San Antonio native also helped mentor a pair of first team All-MAC selections in libero Challen Geraghty and outside hitter Kelsey Bittinger. Geraghty ranked fourth in the nation in digs (669) and digs per set (5.53) and posted the second-most digs in a season in program history. Bittinger tallied 3.19 digs per frame to top all non defensive specialists in the league.

Prior to her time in Ohio, Gonzalez spent a short stint at Penn State after graduation as a volunteer where she helped with film analysis and defensive skills. She also served as an assistant coach with Alamo Club Volleyball for the 16 Premiere Team in San Antonio and helped out at UTSA for the 2014 semester training with the defense.

Before her coaching career began, Gonzalez was a three-time team captain for the two-time National Champion Nittany Lions (2011-14) that made four appearances at the NCAA Tournament, including three Final Fours, and captured back-to-back Big Ten championship titles in 2012 and 2013.

Gonzalez earned a degree in kinesiology with a minor in fitness studies from Penn State in 2015.
