A former All-American at Louisville, Austen Childs is in his first season as assistant coach at UTSA.
Childs came to the Alamo City from Kenyon College, where he was an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams. He implemented the lifting and fitness program for both squads. During his tenure, the Lords captured their first ITA Indoor National Championship and achieved their first No. 1 ranking.

A three-time All-American and three-time BIG EAST Conference Player of the Year at Louisville, Childs helped the Cardinals reach new heights during his four-year career. A team captain for his final three years, Childs earned All-America accolades in singles (twice) and doubles. He helped lead Louisville to the program’s first-ever top-10 ranking and a pair of BIG EAST Championships.
Childs was a four-time NCAA Championships qualifier in singles, including being the 2010 NCAA Runner-Up, and a three-time qualifier in doubles. He was named all-conference all four years and finished his Louisville career with a 119-50 singles record, including 77-22 in dual matches, and 107 doubles victories, both school records.
Also a standout in the classroom, Childs was tabbed the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award.
Childs was a member of the New Zealand Davis Cup team in 2010 and registered the deciding point in the squad’s 3-2 win against Pakistan. He also achieved a Top 40 ITF Junior World Ranking.
A native of Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Childs earned a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from Louisville in 2012.
