Former PGA Player of the Year Bill Rogers is in his seventh season overall working with the UTSA golf programs and his first as a volunteer coach for the women.  

Rogers was UTSA’s Director of Golf Development from 2011-14 after serving the previous three seasons as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs.

The former PGA Player of the Year has helped tutor more than 20 all-conference performers and helped lead the programs to a more than 35 top-five finishes, including the back-to-back Southland Conference Championships for the women in 2011-12.

During his tenure with the women, Rogers has helped UTSA win seven tournaments, including the 2011 and 2012 Southland Conference Championships, and record 24 additional top-five finishes. The Roadrunners also have captured 10 individual crowns, including conference titles by Allie Jordan (2009), Shannon Jungman (2012) and Fabiola Arriaga (2014). UTSA also qualified for three straight NCAA Regionals, including the program’s first-ever at-large selection in 2013. He has helped tutor 18 all-conference honorees, including nine first-team selections, and a pair of Southland Golfers of the Year in Arriaga (2012) and Paola Valerio (2011).

In six seasons with the men, Rogers helped lead UTSA to 36 top-10 finishes, including nine top-five showings. The Roadrunners captured back-to-back Rice Intercollegiate team titles in 2013-14. He helped tutor six all-conference performers, including two-time honoree and 2011 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year Ryan Werre.

Rogers is a former PGA Tour member who began his career in 1974. He collected 14 tour wins that featured six PGA wins and eight international victories during his 14-year career, including the 1981 British Open. His first pro win came on the Japan Golf Tour at the 1977 Pacific Masters and he then won his first PGA event a year later at the Bob Hope Desert Classic by a two-stroke margin over Jerry McGee. The following year, he won the Suntory World Match Play Championship and the Suntory Open. Rogers last PGA win came at the USF&G Classic on March 20, 1983.

Rogers put together his best season in 1981. He was named the PGA Player of the Year after seven tournament triumphs, including four PGA victories at the British Open, Sea Pines Heritage, World Series of Golf and Texas Open. Rogers also finished runner-up at the U.S. Open. He capped off the season as a winning member of the 1981 Ryder Cup team, and 10 years later, he guided the Ryder Cup team to victory as an assistant coach.

Prior to his professional career, Rogers was a four-year letterwinner at Houston, where he earned first-team All-America honors in 1973. He later was inducted into the Houston Cougars Hall of Fame in 1987.

Rogers was a board member of Golf San Antonio and the Director of Golf at the San Antonio Country Club from 1990-2000. He also brought the American Junior Golf Association to San Antonio and played a key role in the development of Briggs Ranch Golf Club. Rogers was inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 1995 and San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
