Kyle Drennan is in his first year as UTSA's director of men's basketball operations in 2022-23. He was announced in the role on June 7, 2022.
“We are excited to add Kyle to our staff,” Henson said. “Kyle brings a ton of experience in college basketball, in a variety of different roles, to our program. He has a great knowledge of Texas prep basketball and has a tremendous feel for junior colleges in our region. He brings a previous relationship with our coaching staff into our program which will allow him to step in immediately and become an instant asset as we prepare for an exciting 2022-23 season.”
Drennan joins the Roadrunners after serving as either a coach or a director of operations for the last four seasons. Most recently, he was an assistant coach at Maine after previously serving as the operations director at Illinois-Chicago. He was the head coach at McCook [Neb.] College in 2019-20 after serving as the director of operations at McNeese.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join this staff,” Drennan said. “When I was new into this business and at Labette Community College, I started coming to UTSA practices when I had breaks and was in Austin. This staff was always amazing to me from the start and I have built some good relationships with all of them over the years. I have told the people around me that if I ever had the chance to work here, I would jump all over it. The opportunity finally came and I couldn’t be more thankful to Coach Henson for welcoming me onto his staff.”
Drennan served as the director of operations at Illinois-Chicago in 2020-21, helping navigate a COVID-19 impacted season that saw the Flames post a 7-4 record at home.
While leading the McCook College Indians in 2019-20, Drennan helped direct the club to their first playoff win in 20 years, a home playoff game – a first in 13 years – and a team GPA reach 3.0+ for the first time in 12 years. He helped guide Le’Tre Darthard, Tyrik Singh and Raheim Sullivan to all-region and all-conference honors.
Prior to his time in McCook, Drennan served as the director of operations at McNeese State for a season where he oversaw travel, academics, nonconference scheduling, film analysis, social media, budget and student managers.
Drennan moved to McNeese State after serving as the director of scouting and operations with JUCO Advocate out of Austin, Texas, where he guided players to the junior college ranks assisting them to obtain scholarships from four-year programs.
He also worked as the Director of Scouting and Social Media at Texas Top 100 where he developed and executed regional camps, evaluated players at the local and national levels and spearheaded social media coverage of live and upcoming events.
Drennan broke into coaching in 2015 as an assistant coach at Labette Community College in Parsons, Kan., where he was responsible for skill development of the guard and wing positions as well as game plans, film analysis, marketing, and out-of-state recruiting.
He worked in marketing with the Fenway Sports Group and the Salem Red Sox, a minor league baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. There he developed short and long term marketing plans as well as building relationships with Fortune 500 companies.
The Aurora, Colo., native is a 2009 graduate of the University of Colorado with degrees in marketing and business management.
