Dr. Pavit Patel is in his sixth season on the UTSA staff and second as the program’s quarterbacks coach. He previously served as a senior analyst and assistant wide receivers coach in 2022-23 after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant.

During Patel’s time on the UTSA staff, the Roadrunners have enjoyed the most successful five-year run in program history with a 46-20 overall record, 31-8 regular season league mark, two conference championships, five bowl appearances and back-to-back bowl wins.

In his first year as the quarterbacks coach, Patel helped mentor Owen McCown to one of the most productive seasons in program history. McCown completed 294 of 467 passes for 3,424 yards and 25 touchdowns and also rushed for 340 yards and three TDs to give him 3,764 yards of total offense in 13 starts. The Roadrunners won five of their last six games, including a 44-15 defeat of Coastal Carolina in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl that closed out a seven-win campaign.

Prior to his promotion to quarterbacks coach, Patel was a senior analyst and assistant receivers coach for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

In 2023, the receivers room was paced by a record-setting season from Joshua Cephus, who broke the program standard with 1,151 yards after catching 89 passes, 10 of which he turned into touchdowns. Cephus also became UTSA’s all-time leader in receptions (313) and receiving yards (3,655) that year before signing as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In 2022, the Roadrunners captured a second straight conference championship and finished with an 11-3 overall record. UTSA boasted one of the most prolific wide receivers trio in the nation in Cephus, De’Corian “JT” Clark and Zakhari Franklin, as the three all-conference selections combined to catch 232 passes for 2,862 yards and 29 touchdowns. Franklin earned first-team all-league and honorable mention All-America accolades with 94 receptions, 1,136 yards and 15 TDs. Cephus collected second-team all-conference honors after hauling in 87 passes for 985 yards and six scores. Clark also was named to the C-USA Second Team after piling up 741 yards and eight touchdowns on 51 receptions despite missing the last five contests due to a season-ending injury.

Patel first worked with the wide receivers as a graduate assistant in 2021. He helped UTSA to a 12-2 record, including an 11-0 start that saw the Roadrunners ranked as high as No. 15 nationally, and to the program’s first-ever conference championship. Cephus, Clark and Franklin combined to catch 204 passes for 2,585 yards and 25 TDs.

Patel spent his first season on the UTSA staff helping with the tight ends. Led by honorable mention all-conference performer Leroy Watson, the group combined for 23 receptions and 289 yards to help the Roadrunners finish with seven wins and an appearance in the First Responder Bowl.

Patel got his coaching career underway in 2015 as an undergraduate assistant at Texas, where he first worked with current UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor and offensive coordinator Justin Burke, before serving as quality control for the offense and special teams at North Texas in 2016.

Patel received his bachelor’s degree in biology/pre-med from Texas in 2016. He earned his doctorate of medicine degree from the UT Health Science Center in 2021.

A native of Houston, he and his wife, Pinkey, reside in the San Antonio area.
